“Material Things”

Metal, Ceramics

ARTISTS FRANCISCO ROSARIO + KATIE ALDWORTH

Franc and Katie work alongside each other and in tandem at Material Things where Franc works in wood and welding and Katie ceramics, often in a minimal aesthetic. The Peep Show created timely inspiration to work on a collaborative piece inspired by one of their many shared interests, fashion. Using finishing techniques of more color and texture, this work represents their less often shown exploration of loud. They see the window as an opportunity to expand and be in conversation with their Hyattsville community around play, inspiration, and the future.

“Faces of Hyattsville”

Photography Series, various sizes

ARTIST JULIETTE FRADIN

FACES of HYATTSVILLE
A photo project about the community by Juliette Fradin

This series of portraits is part of a work that set out to feature and explore a sense of community and belonging in the city of Hyattsville, MD. It aims to capture and document a nurturing community by photographing people who are part of it.

My name is Juliette. I moved to the U.S. fifteen years ago and lived in Hyattsville ever since. I am French and I am a family and documentary photographer. Being an immigrant myself with no previous ties to the U.S., I quickly realized the importance of having strong connections and a supportive and diverse community.

Through photography, I wanted to celebrate the Hyattsville community. I believe that a strong community involves officials, residents, schools, businesses, and people from diverse origins and backgrounds. However, it begins with oneself.

There are multiple ways the Hyattsville community shows solidarity and support to one another. I wanted to highlight the diversity of our sanctuary city and the people that shape this close-knit community.

It is also a way for me to give back.

The portraits have been taken between 2015 and 2020 at different events like potlucks, neighborhood watch meetings, summer jams, block parties, city events, or farmers markets throughout the city.

ARTIST C.S. CORBIN

C.S. Corbin is a visual artist based in Washington, D.C. They work in acrylic and sculptural mediums as well as digital illustration. When their winemaking career took a sharp turn at the start of the pandemic, Corbin started creating again after a ten year hiatus from earning their Studio Art degree from Florida State University. Corbin’s return to sketching, paralleled with their own process of gender transition, has served as both a means of healing and livelihood. Their work is a colorful extension of their journey exploring gender, their southern roots, and the beauty of unlearning.
